Oh, John Edwards

Posted on 08 August 2008 by Michelle

Former Senator John Edwards has admitted to having an affair while on the campaign trail… while his wife is dealing with an incurable form of cancer. According to ABC News, which will air an interview with Edwards tonight. How’s that for Olympics competition. The woman involved, Rielle Hunter, was hired by him to make short documentaries about the campaign. The National Enquirer broke the story, which is why most mainstream media was like, “yeah, right.” When they tried to peg the Edwards as the father of her child, a former campaign aide, Andrew Young, claimed that he was the father instead. Classy.

This makes me mad because I had hoped that his fieriness and passion would translate as U.S. Attorney General for the Obama administration. It would have been like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington… and he’s cute. But now he’s a dirbag, and a lot of people are real disappointed with him. I defended him through his $400 haircut. But now, I’m feeling gypped.

And I feel really, really bad about Elizabeth Edwards. I remember early in the campaign, we wanted her to run more than John. At the magazine I work at, we did a cute little profile with her, and basically fawned over how cool, and smart and beautiful she is. She’s an awesome lady and I hope she and the fam do well.

So, are you shocked? Do you think Obama’s other baby mama is going to come forward next? (well, there was that dude who claimed he gave Obama a BJ a long time ago).

Paris off to the Pink House.

Posted on 06 August 2008 by Michelle

You know, I really don’t like Paris Hilton. But her rebuttal to McCain’s dumb commercial regarding Barack Obama’s celebrity was probably my favorite thing that she’s ever done. I wonder who wrote it for her…

McCain the Hypocrite

Posted on 13 July 2008 by Michelle

As reported a while ago, Sen. McCain isn’t too keen on making sure women are able to earn the same wages as an equally qualified man. And here’s him being squeamish on birth control.

Now, I’ve always believed that actions speak louder than words — especially the words of campaign advisers. Via the Wall Street Journal:

At a breakfast with reporters, Fiorina suggested that individuals–and women in particular–be given more flexibility to determine what their health insurance plans should cover. “There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won’t cover birth-control medication. Those women would like a choice,” she observed.

When McCain was asked for his position on the issue, he said—with a nervous laugh–“I certainly do not want to discuss that issue.”

The reporter pressed. “But apparently you’ve voted against—“

“I don’t know what I voted,” McCain said.

BTW, I didn’t realize that Carly Fiorina is a McCain adviser. While it’s nice to see the Republicans are going after the “woman vote,” I do with that John McCain were in on the strategy himself. Anyway, Jessica from Feministing gives her 2 cents on McCain’s hypocrisy, the first missive of many through November.

Sarah Haskins, Still Kicking Ass

Posted on 17 June 2008 by Michelle

As Jessica at Feministing says, the more I watch Sarah Haskins’ “Target:Women” videos as they crop up, the more I realize how brilliant and awesome she is. In this latest installment of the ongoing series (well, I hope it’s ongoing!) she skewers the ridiculousness of “angry women voters” and the further ridiculousness of the candidates’ attempts to go for those leftover “angry women votes” from HRC’s primary run. Ohhhh Snap! Check the video after the jump…

The Democratic Primary — in 8 Minutes

Posted on 16 June 2008 by Michelle

The Democratic primary process has been the longest, and most costly, almost breaking the record of the number of voters participating. For those of you living under a rock or about to go to a dinner party with your most brilliant (annoyingly all-knowing) political junkie friends, here’s a quick primer by Slate.com:

Countering the Obama Bashing

Posted on 13 June 2008 by Michelle

Just in time for a whole lot of stupid over the next few months (and potentially 4-8 years) Gina from What About Our Daughters? has launched MichelleObamaWatch.com. This presidential election will thrust an African-American woman into the spotlight in a way unparalleled to anything we’ve seen in recent history.

Just in the past 2 days, we’ve seen some pretty shocking (and not-so-shocking stuff at the same time) stuff go down:

- Yazmany Arboleda’s exhibition, “The Assassination of Barack Obama” drew enough uproar to warrant NYPD and the Secret Service. You can check the images, here, but it’s more or less some artist’s poor attempt at being avant garde. Apparently the exhibition is about the media’s portrayal of Barack Obama (there’s another one of Sen. Hillary Clinton). Arboleda tried to put it all together in an empty storefront in Midtown Manhattan for a 24 hour guerrilla show. Both shows had previously been in galleries, only open to people by appointment. The Barack Obama exhibit features nooses, a gigantic black penis, and a photo of his kids, Malia and Shasha with the words “nappy headed hos” written above them. Secret Service shuts that shit dowwwwn, and the guy is detained for a few hours.

He cries “artistic freedom.” I say, he’s a sucky artist. I was offended looking at it; I’m all about First Amendment rights, but the exhibit is really kinda dumb. It’s more provocative than something that sends a message… And, dammit, I’m very, very scared of Obama getting shot, like many other people are, too.

- Those fools at Fox “News” referred to Michelle Obama not as Barack’s wife, but his “Baby Mama.”

Now I KNOW the Obamas are probably the most idyllic black family in the country, but according to Fox News, all black people have illegitimate children and aren’t responsible to their families. Eventually, Fox apologized in a statement sent to Politico.

“A producer on the program exercised poor judgment in using this chyron during the segment,” Fox’s Senior Vice President of Programming Bill Shine said in a statement to Politico.

Classsssss.

Fortunately, there’s a lot of people who are basically pissed about the treatment of the Obamas and the Clintons for that matter. But this is not the last that we’re going to see (ahem, cough cough, Faux News cough hack blecccch)
