Quotables: Gloria Steinem

Posted on 29 September 2008 by Michelle

In an interview with early New York magazine staffer Gloria Steinem in the magazine’s 40th anniversary issue:

NY: What were office politics like when there were fewer women, Gloria?

GS: At New York Magazine, I felt it was my job to—they were nice guys, but it was my job to keep a good working relationship without going to bed with them or hurting their egos. The term sexual harassment didn’t exist yet. But it was fun because they were smart, good people. And they did change their attitudes. Jimmy Breslin in the beginning was skeptical about women freelancers. He said, “Ah, there’s too many girls here. It’s because we don’t pay enough.” But he gradually changed and became my friend, which meant he would call me up at three in the morning and say, “What’s doing? Come and meet me at the bar.

Rep: Sterilization for Louisiana’s Poor Women = Moneysaver…

Posted on 25 September 2008 by Michelle

Apparently, all those less fortunate people are sucking up your tax dollars, so let’s make sure they can’t mate… Wow, what a disgusting argument, that I can’t even believe still (publicly) exists.

Louisiana (of course) state Rep. John LaBruzzo (R-Metairie) is proposing that the state pay poor women $1000 to have their tubes tied.

LaBruzzo said he worries that people receiving government aid such as food stamps and publicly subsidized housing are reproducing at a faster rate than more affluent, better-educated people who presumably pay more tax revenue to the government. He said he is gathering statistics now.

Wait, isn’t this just like Communist China’s 1-Child provision? Or Nazi Germany? No, of course not! It’s voluntary!

“It’s easy to say, ‘Oh, he’s a racist, ‘ ” LaBruzzo said. “The hard part is to sit down and think of some solutions.”

LaBruzzo said he opposes abortion and paying people to have abortions. He described a sterilization program as providing poor people with better opportunities to avoid welfare, because they would have fewer children to feed and clothe.

BTW, this is the same guy who proposed abolishing Lake Pontchartrain’s Police Department…

If you’re as disgusted as i am, I highly suggest you email Rep. LaBruzzo and, politely, tell him to suck it.

Sarah Silverman Wants You To Campaign to G’ma

Posted on 25 September 2008 by Michelle

Sarah Silverman, my comedic hero and girlfriend in my brain, is urging everyone, but Jews in particular to head down to Boca this fall to campaign to the old folks, by letting them know that Barack Obama isn’t a scary, anti-Israel guy.

Remember what went down in Florida in 2000 when a bunch of old people couldn’t tell who they were voting for? Yeah, we don’t want that to happen again.

Yeah, the video’s a little offensive, but hey, it’s Sarah Silverman — what do you expect. Anyway, if you’re so inclined, check out TheGreatSchlep.com

Your Thoughts: The President’s Address

Posted on 24 September 2008 by Michelle

So tonight, the President — you remember, that guy who’s still in office — gave a primetime address Wednesday night about the insane economy meltdown, and how he and his pals are going to fix all of this.

Did he say enough for you? Inspiring or a crock of doodie? He has a 16 percent approval rating, by the way.

South Dakota Deciding on Abortion Again

Posted on 24 September 2008 by Michelle

Badlands, South Dakota

Badlands, South Dakota

Early voting began this week for the abortion ban in South Dakota – yes, again, 3 years later. The ban would basically make it impossible for women to have an abortion in the state, and doctors could face felony charges (up to 10 years in the slammer!!) for doing the procedure.

The 2006 proposal was rejected by voters, mainly because there were no exceptions. This year’s version would allow women who were raped, victims of incest, or who face difficult medical complications due to pregnancy.

The state had one clinic that offered abortions (Planned Parenthood in Sioux Falls), but it closed in July after a new law required doctors to inform patients of the humanity of the fetuses within hours of the abortion taking place. Doctors could even be sued for not complying.
