Oh Those Horny Democrats

Posted on 29 August 2008 by Michelle

Ads for people seeking sexual encounters in Denver during the time of the Democratic National Convention spiked last week, compared to the same days of the week earlier in August. According to CNet, there are usually around 425 active posts on Craigslist’s “Casual Encounters” section on each Sunday in August before the convention. On August 24, there were 763 posts up, an 80 percent increase.

Most post headlines are along the lines of “Here 4 DNC? Come get sexual with me”; “Does the DNC make you hot?”; and “Looking to service a young Democrat.” And of course, they get racier

I can just imagine St. Paul next week — Democrats may wanna hook up and have fun, but the GOP is into some kinky stuff hhehe

MLK had a dream

Posted on 28 August 2008 by Michelle

45 years ago today, Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, and he shared it passionately with a nation. Tonight, part of his dream will officially be answered. We will hear Barack Obama accept the nomination, the first person of color to lead the ticket for either of the top two political parties in the United States. While I hate the focus on the issue of race in this election, I think this is due respect.

In honor of Dr. King, check out video of his groundbreaking speech below, or read the text here.

Westboro Will Protest at Tubbs Jones Funeral

Posted on 27 August 2008 by Michelle

Those crazy fundies are at it again. The Westboro Baptist Church, who believes that God hates everyone who is gay, Canadian, and Middle Eastern — a lot of other groups, too, but why dwell on the depressing.

Anyway, the Kansan church is going to Ohio to do what they do best: protest funerals. Perhaps you’ve seen them at your local fallen soldier or AIDS patient funeral. Well, they’re coming after the late Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones… It appears that nothing is sacred to this “religious group.” According to On Top, the group announced their plan:

“We will be there at the funeral of this evil woman – Representative, Stephanie Tubbs Jones. This country stood by as she voted to criminalize the word of God!! … She is in a HELLA TROUBLE as her sentence is just beginning, you know.”

Why is she evil? Because she fought for LGBT rights and believed that women and men were equal human beings? Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s not evil. And it BETTER NOT be because she was the first African American woman to hold a Congressional seat from Ohio.

Target Women: Chick Flicks

Posted on 23 August 2008 by Michelle

Just in time for the release of The Women, also known as Sex in the Suburbs, Sarah’s Back, reminding us why we don’t see all these asinine chick flicks. Someone I know just said that all girl-powered chick flicks end in babies and date-movies end in weddings. Will movie execs ever catch on, and stop funding such stupidly predictable, condescending films? Will people stop going to see them, so studios will actually stop buying and producing horrible movies where a boy meets a girl, one of them loses the other one, then they have to fight to get back together… and somewhere in there involves a wedding or a baby, or singing into a hairbrush?

Rachel Maddow Gets a Show

Posted on 19 August 2008 by Michelle

Yaaaay, finally, a brilliant, awesome, woman is getting a news show on a major cable news network, and it has nothing to do with her looks (Paula Zahn) or her craziness (Nancy Grace) or her allegiance to the right wing (Greta Van Sustren).

Radio host and television commentator Rachel Maddow will have her own show on MSNBC starting September 8, right after the Republican convention. Her show will air at 9 p.m. following Countdown with Keith Olberman (he broke the news on daily kos today hehe)

She is possibly the first openly gay woman to host a prime-time television show, making her super awesome and probably a hell of a lot less likely to fall prey to being all glitz, cleavage, and big hair.

Maddow, 35, is a Rhodes scholar with a PhD in political science. She also has a background in activism, prison reform, and HIV/AIDS. She currently hosts The Rachel Maddow show on Air America radio, and has filled the guest chair for Olberman in the past.
