MTA: Stop groping? Meh.

Posted on 25 July 2008 by Michelle

While initially it was a nice idea, the City of New York has decided not to distribute anti-groping ads… because it will probably incite more groping.

According to the NY Post, 63 percent of female riders claim to have been sexually harassed on the subway, and 10 percent sexually assaulted. I am certainly one of those in the majority (check out the very gross story of how I know first-hand). Nothing like that has happened to me yet in LA, even with taking the subway for a year everyday, but I’m sure it will.

But something seriously has to be done. Just a few weeks ago, a man in NYC (who turns out is a repeat offender) was arrested for grinding up against a woman. Boston has a similar campaign going; numbers increased with the campaign, (38 through June 2008 compared to 17 through June 2007) but police say that it’s probably due to increased reporting.
