Hold On To Your Patches

Posted on 13 May 2008 by Michelle

Public Citizen is pushing a petition to get the Federal Food and Drug Association to ban Ortho-Evra (you know, quitting babies one step at a time). According to the petition, the patch releases waaaay too much estrogen (60 percent more on average exposure), an increased risk of blood clotting, and even worse side effects than other hormone-based birth control.

Also, there has been a crazy drop in demand for the patch, probably because it’s not the most pleasant thing to deal with. In 2004, nearly 10 million women were knocking down the pharmacy door to get a supply of patches. In 2007, prescriptions dropped 73 percent, to 2.7 million. Oh, and there are those women who have died or become sick using the patch.

Sucks for Ortho-Evra. Well, it really sucks for the women who take it and then have to deal with a lot of terrible side effects — you know, like death. Many women turned to the patch as a way of convenience, but then it turns out that the side effects are worse than a daily dose of the regular old bc pill… and how do you wear that thing to the beach? How do you hide your baby quitting patch?

Santogold is Pretty Rad

Posted on 13 May 2008 by Michelle

My friend Meghan posted probably one of the most artsy music videos I’ve seen in a very long time. It’s by Santogold, and as she told me, it conjures a mix of M.I.A. and 80s New Wave. Just listen. It’s good.

Mary J’s Reaching Out to Help the Ladies

Posted on 13 May 2008 by Michelle

Miss Mary J. Blige has decided to delve into philanthropy in a way that seems very fitting for the queen of hip-hop soul. Her newest venture is a nonprofit org that will help women develop careers and work on their self confidence. The charity will dole out scholarships, grants, and programs.

She’s working with the Steve Stoute Foundation to get The Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now off the ground. The Westchester Jewish Community Services is going to open the Mary J. Blige Center for Women in YonKers, N.Y (where Blige grew into awesomeness). Don’t worry, the plan is for it to expand through New York and then nation-wide.

“…I believe every young woman, if given encouragement and a helping hand (a hand filled with resources), can reach her greatest potential,’ Blige said according to FFAWN. “It is my great hope that FFAWN will be a vehicle to help other woman reach greater heights despite their environment, despite low self esteem, despite their immediate circumstances.”

Prom dress arrest

Posted on 12 May 2008 by Michelle

Well, it’s not that this girl’s dress was sooooo amazing that she was arrested. More like her outfit was so skimpy that the cops came to the Sugar Land Marriott in Texas and took Marche Taylor away in handcuffs…

When she got to the lobby, school officials deemed the dress inappropriate for a school function & violated school dress code.

“We were arguing back and forth because I wanted to know why I can’t get into my prom,” Taylor said.

Even after offering to provide more cover, Ms. Taylor was denied access. So she demanded her money back.

Eventually, Ms. Taylor said, someone called police. Officers showed up, handcuffed her and escorted her out. A photographer snapped a photo of Ms. Taylor, in handcuffs, being led out of the hotel. Madison High School Principal Aubrey Todd said said the dress was inappropriate and violated the rules.

And as ridiculous as the dress was, the girl got thrown out of her PROM! Depending on 1.) where you live, 2.) your future aspirations, the Prom is the biggest night of one’s life.

Video after the jump…
